Happy Saturday !
Seeing the news about Bennu, it makes you wonder…we’re so worried about climate change, and rightfully so, but then you realize there’s a giant rock out there that could wipe us all out regardless. It kind of makes everything else seem…well, a little futile.
So — of course, I had to write about it :
While we worry about climate change, let’s also consider the potential threat from asteroid Bennu. It’s not an extinction-level event, but an impact would still pack a devastating punch, equivalent to 1.4 billion tons of TNT. That’s enough to cause widespread destruction and immense loss of life, especially if it hit a populated area. And Bennu is a sizable rock – about 500 meters across – meaning even a relatively small impact could wreak havoc.

What makes this more concerning is that Bennu has two close encounters with Earth in its future. The first is in 2135, and the second, even closer pass, is in 2196. During the 2135 flyby, our planet’s gravity could slightly alter Bennu’s orbit, potentially putting it on a collision course for September 24, 2182.
So, Bennu is more than just a rock floating in space. It’s a time capsule, a potential threat, and a key to understanding our origins. It’s a reminder that the universe is full of surprises, and that even a seemingly small asteroid can hold big secrets – and pose a significant risk.
