Today, on the 60th anniversary of our Canadian flag – a symbol of our journey since British rule – it feels right to reflect on Canada’s future.
Back in 2016, I shared some satirical predictions about the incoming US administration, a “Top 20″ list of changes I foresaw. While some were tongue-in-cheek, many proved surprisingly accurate. I even suspected a second term, though the path seemed unclear at the time.
In retrospect, some of those potential shifts, however disruptive, might inadvertently benefit Canada down the line. It’s a complicated situation, and I sincerely hope my 2016 predictions ultimately don’t ring true for Canada, like I thought . It’s striking to realize almost a decade has passed, and President Trump is once again a prominent figure. I certainly didn’t foresee the involvement of tech leader Elon Musk back then, but I did predict a tech business.
I encourage you to revisit my 2016 “Top 20” list. See which predictions hit the mark and which didn’t.
Now, I pose a tough question to my fellow Canadians: If it became a real possibility, would you support Canada becoming the 51st state?
While it might seem unsettling for our government, there could be unexpected advantages:
Potential Benefits:
• Lower taxes
• Freedom to live and work in other states
• Increased competition, breaking down monopolies in Canadian businesses and banks
• A boost to free enterprise
• Lower gas and food prices
Potential Drawbacks:
• Taxes on lottery winnings
Poll:
Would you support Canada becoming the 51st state?
• Yes
• No
This is a weighty decision, and I understand the sensitivity of this topic. Please share your thoughts respectfully.
