Directing the Screen: Why Paula Malcomson is the Ultimate character: Karen Jefferson

When you spend years drafting complex structures or calculating the hard mechanics of a universe, you learn to spot the perfect anchor for a project. In my science fiction novel, Guardians of Humanity, Corporal Karen Jefferson is a character who demands a very specific, rare kind of screen presence. She is arrogant, brilliant, self-absorbed, and lethal.

Lately, I’ve been visualizing who could truly embody her on the screen. The answer keeps coming back to one phenomenal, gritty actress: Paula Malcomson.

You might know her as Trixie from Deadwood, Abby from Ray Donovan, or Amanda Graystone from Caprica. She has made a career out of playing women with iron backbones who refuse to sugarcoat their flaws. And that is exactly who Karen Jefferson is.

Defying the Timeline for the Screen

Now, if you’ve read Guardians of Humanity, you know Karen is written as a reckless “Dare Devil” pilot and Geological Science Officer in her early 30s. But Hollywood translation is a different beast altogether. Honestly, if I had the chance to adjust her character layout for an on-screen adaptation, I would bypass the age hurdle entirely.

Instead of a hot-headed pilot in her 30s, I would rewrite Karen for the screen as a seasoned, lethal Chief Geological Officer in her late 40s or early 50s.

Think about it. A woman who has maintained an ego scaled at a 10, a flawless physical condition, and dangerous, reckless flying skills into her late 40s is infinitely more intimidating. It means she isn’t just a spoiled rich girl anymore ; she is an absolute institution on a mission.

Commander Cardin

Dedicated to the Career, Secret in Love

What truly solidifies Paula Malcomson as the perfect fit for Karen isn’t just her acting range; it’s the powerful parallel in their personal philosophies.

In Guardians of Humanity, Karen Jefferson and Chief Mission Commander Cardin Mason are deeply, fiercely in love. Yet, neither has ever been married. Why? Because they are entirely consumed by their high-stakes military careers. Space exploration and survival don’t leave room for traditional domestic lives. To protect what they have from the prying eyes of the fleet—and the dangerous, obsessive gaze of King Osiris—Karen keeps her relationship with Cardin a total secret.

Paula Malcomson mirrors this exact energy in the real world. She is a consummate professional who has dedicated her entire life to the mastery of her craft, intentionally keeping her private life completely out of the Hollywood spotlight. She doesn’t do red carpet gossip or overshare on social media; she lets her work do the talking. That rare ability to hold an iron-clad boundary of privacy is exactly what Karen needs when guarding her hidden romance with Cardin aboard the SIRUS-S757.

How Paula Fits the Rest of the Blueprint

Beyond that shared air of mystery, Paula possesses the exact unvarnished human truth required to bring Karen’s dual nature to life:

The “Dreamer” Edge: Karen belongs to a lineage known as Dreamers—provocative, manipulative, and entirely used to controlling the minds and actions of men. Malcomson knows exactly how to project that cold, calculating seductiveness without ever leaning into cheap, theatrical clichés.

The Arrogance & Military Discipline: With an ego at a perfect 10 and master-level combat skills, Karen doesn’t back down from anyone. Malcomson can deliver that cold, biting arrogance in her sleep. When she stands her ground on screen, the audience will instantly believe she can throw a knife or level an automatic weapon with absolute precision.

The Comical, Flirtatious Courting: Despite the secrecy, Karen’s courting with Cardin is a turbulent, comical, “bad boy/bad girl” dynamic. Malcomson’s incredible past on-screen chemistry in heavy dramas proves she can handle that exact kind of fierce, chaotic romantic tension perfectly.

The Vision Is Set

Adjusting the lens to age Karen up for the screen doesn’t change the heart of Guardians of Humanity. It elevates it. Seeing an older, completely unapologetic, razor-sharp Karen Jefferson dominate the screen—fiercely protective of her career and her secret love—would give the sci-fi genre an unforgettable anti-heroine.

When building a universe, you look for structures that won’t break. Paula Malcomson as Karen Jefferson is as solid as it gets.
